Giovanni Cioni

After a universitary degree (communication and anthropology) and a training course in documentary filming with Jean Rouch, he started the company Qwazi qWazi filM in Brussels with other "self-made" filmmakers. They produced films like Sottovoce, Tableau avec Chutes by Claudio Pazienza, Pécheurs à Cheval  by Marc Antoine Roudil, an Arte Thema night with La Belgique, le pays où Icare s’est noyé, the project L’Invention de Bruxelles with Tsai Min Liang, Jean Pierre Bekolo, Teresa Villaverde, Jay Rosenblatt, Aurelio Grimaldi.

Some of his films: In Purgatorio, Prize of the Audience at the Festival dei Popoli (Firenze 2009), Prize of Immaterial Patrimony at the Cinéma du réel (Paris 2010); Lourdes Las Vegas (from Bernadetje by Alain Platel and Arne Sierens), shown and awarded in various international festivals, broadcast on RTBF, VRT and France 3; Nous/Autres, in Belgian cinemas, broadcast on RTBF, selected in various festivals (including Visions du Réel in Nyon, Bilbao, Namur, Barcelone, Douarnenez); Témoins, Lisbonne août 00 (presented at the Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin); the series « Films Muets à écouter » (Planetarium, Si Par une Nuit, Je voudrais te parler, Funambulite);  Dal Paradiso, with Andrea Cambi and Carlo Monni;  the « trilogy » En vie (Une saison en enfer, Love and Sans Fin Tyresias), with Morad Ammar  Barbara Manzetti.
 
He also co-founded a arthouse in Brussels, "Actors Studio", and collaborated with the distributor Cinélibre and the Arenberg Galeries cinema for the first programmations of Écran Total, for retrospectives (including Artavazd Pelechian), and Portugese cinema screenings.  

He works with choreographers (Barbara Manzetti, Enzo Pezzella), composers (Juan Carlos Tolosa), visual artists (Marta Wengorovius in Lisboa, Martin Berghammer in Berlin).

In 2003 and 2005, he directed a writing and directing workshop at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art Dramatique of Strasbourg's National Theatre.  

Since 2005, he has been developing and animating the Laboratorio Uccellacci with Pinangelo Marino, a laboratory of filming creation with high school students in Tuscany.
