Volonté de Dieu (la)
The Will of God
Belgium, 1993, 16 mm, Format diffusion : 1.33 (SD), 1.67 (Super 16), 56 minutes
This film follows the odissey of death-squad captain Dirk Coetzee, ferreted out on his London retreat by Manu Bonmariage. Ever since he resolved to confess to Jacques Pauw and Max Dupreez in the Vrij Weekblad, South Africa's only independent newspaper at the time, Dirk Coetzee has lived in exile in London under the protection of his former enemy, the A.N.C., and under htreat from his colleagues in the police, whose ethics he betrayed in revelations that rocked in South Africa and the world.
Both Dirk, in his confessions, and Jacques Pauw in his investigations, seem the victims of their « afrikaner » education under the rule of the apartheid. Dirk was « elected by God » from among his people, and charged with eliminating all those who might compromise the construction of the Promised Land by the sole white race on the tip of Africa.
« The Will of God » also takes a look at the nostalgia for apartheid among those in the white homeland, Oranja, a paradise regained in the middle of the desert, where they pursue their divine mission. The outcome of South Africa is « in God's hands ». Are they black o white? The film helps us to understand those who used His name to inflict His sacred will.
